A personal essay about growing up with romance novels in a too-small bedroom — and why a woman who loves hard should never apologize for it. Plus book recommendations across every sub-genre.
What a fun read, Sandra! I loved learning about your childhood home and the magic of books to transport you from a tiny, shared bedroom. And oh my gosh! Sweet Valley High! Those were probably the very first romance books I read.
Thanks so much, Caitlin! ❤️ I will forever be so grateful to that man for bringing me all those books! Did you ever watch the TV show for Sweet Valley High?
These may not fall into the type of romance books you are talking about but my niece is a successful writer who publishes romance books on Amazon. She lived in Florida for a time but is back in the Pacific Northwest. You might want to check her out. Her name is Stephanie Taylor and she has many series, several with islands as the backdrop. Since it is hard to find her directly, a couple recent titles are “How to Leave the Palace” and “The Launch.”
Ohhhh how I LOVE this!!! The detail and how you were sucked into those books! I feel the same way when I read a book or listen to an audiobook. I feel like I’m in it and going through the same emotions, thrills, excitement, sadness, love, passion, scared.. it’s crazy! No matter where you are, you can pretend you’re anywhere.
Thank you, Jenny!!! You’re so sweet! 😘 Feeling like you’re in it is my absolute favorite thing about reading. I truly believe it makes us more empathetic to other people’s experiences and emotions. The best books inspire me to ask myself what I would do in the same situation. What’s one of your favorite books?
