In this edition of Sandrapop, I’ll be acting as your comedic curator, bringing you my current faves for when you need a laughter lifeline. If you can’t call a friend, these are the next best thing! Inspired by my beautiful friend, Jenna, who is one of the most hard-working, disciplined, intelligent and beautiful supermoms I know, my hope is that this makes her day, and yours, a little brighter.

5 Substacks that’ll make you snort-laugh into your keyboard
I’ve been on substack for, like, less than a minute and already I’ve found SO MUCH comedic gold. The following substacks are my daily dose of endorphins, because, you know, mom life can be HARD. Specifically mom life where your kid is a teenager that tells you things like, “that’s not a conversation, mom, that’s just talking back and forth”. 😳🫢
Honestly, I only wish this level of insanity on my very worst frenemies.
As you can clearly see, I need these substacks in my life to make me laugh so I don’t cry. In no particular order of favorites, here they are:
It'll Be Fun, They Said: Jess Pan’s “Sorry I’m Late” series is wild. She shares her adventures of working in a London bookstore - literally everyone’s dream job - and somehow pulls together seemingly unrelated loose ends into a ridiculously entertaining story wrapped up in a pretty literary bow. Honestly… I want to be Jess. We ALL want to be Jess.
Shades of Greaves: Oh, Carlos Greaves. You are a man after my own military-industrial complex loving heart! I must say that the post titled “This Newsletter is Now Sponsored by Raytheon” really resonated with me. Note the decision tree at the end because this may or may not be how the government actually works. And if I have to tell you…well, you know.
End Of The Bench Sports: Basically, the only way I’ll read sports news is if it’s FAKE sports news. It’s the most entertaining AND the most accurate. Don’t believe me? Go read “Aging Millennial Still Blaming High School Soccer for Tight Hamstrings,” then come back and apologize.
The Big One: Not only does Lillian Stone make you laugh, but she also gives you life-changing advice. For example, did you know you can get $20 great health insurance by working for TWO hours a day as a Chicago Public Schools crossing guard?! Yeah, me either. But SHE did. Also, she has a post about “caring for your creative bod” and the opening sentence is just👌🏽🔥. Do yourself a favor and go read it.
OBSESSED: The only reviews you’ll ever need to read, like, EVER AGAIN are written by Cara Michelle Smith. It doesn’t matter if they’re occasionally biased (it’s BE-YONCE). It only matters that they’re spot on. Exhibit A: “For Madame Web, it’s the one time saying something feels ‘like it was written by a computer’ feels bone-deep accurate, because Madame Web was … kinda made by a computer? (To me, like a group of birds is a ‘flock,’ a group of studio execs is a ‘computer.’).” She gets me.
4 TV shows you’ll want to binge-watch yesterday
So I noticed a trend here - seems like I’m into comedies about the fabulously wealthy. I guess I’m fascinated by the idea that rich people, despite having it all, still end up doing some craaaaaazy shit. Maybe they’re not so different than the rest of us?! *pondering as I sip my coffee*
“Loot” (AppleTV): Maya Rudolph plays the kind of billionaire I want to be when I grow up. Sure, she can’t cook, clean or drive a car, but her heart is in the right place. In a mansion. On a yacht. All the places I want to be. Oh, and she looks fabulous everywhere she goes. The fact that she actually WANTS to do good is a fabulous bonus. If you love irreverent humor, this is the show for you.
“The Gentleman” (Netflix): The criminal underworld has never looked so crazy, sexy cool. The good son goes bad, the bad son goes dumb, and the sultry bombshell Susie Glass (played by Kaya Scodelario) singlehandedly holds it all together. Granted, this is NOT a family friendly show, but you won’t want it to be. You want
Eddieit to be bad. If you love dark humor with a dangerous, stylish vibe, this is the show for you.
“Resident Alien” (Netflix): The trailer is as fun as watching paint dry, so check out this scene instead. Harry (played by Alan Tudyk) plays an alien in a human body who’s expressions say what we’re all really thinking, D’arcy (Alice Wetterlund) is a hot mess I want to be besties with, and Kate (Meredith Garretson) is the married mom that is ALL OF US. If you love a lovable villain and small town antics, this is the show for you.
“Palm Royale” (AppleTV): I mean, you didn’t really expect me to leave this off the list, did you?! Glitz, glamour and greed galore, this show set in fictional 1960s Palm Beach has it all. You can’t help but love Maxine (played by Kristen Wiig) as she hysterically claws her way to the very top of society. Not to mention the high fashion, the gorgeous mansions, and the wealthy socialites who know how to cut you with simply a smile. Oh, and did I mention the POOL BOY?? If you love a strong female cast, this show is for you.

Which books do I reach for when I need a not-so-serious laugh? Anything by Anika Martin never fails to deliver. Take “Most Eligible Billionaire”, for example. Beautiful dog walker with a secret? Check. Cute dog with even cuter name? Check. Handsome almost-billionaire bachelor whose mother left the family business to said cute dog because of course?? Also check. It’s fun, it’s frivolous and it’s fucking fantastic. Go ahead, grab your latte and savor this enemies-to-lovers rom-com. I triple dog dare you not to laugh.
